IEEE has setup a new Study Group in IEEE802.11 on Next Generation Vehicular (SG NGV). The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium supports a backward compatible evolution of the V2X communication. The Consortium sees this initiative as a strengthening of the international cooperation that aims on harmonisation of a common hardware platform for C-ITS – not only for the initial deployment, but also in the long term. This platform for C-ITS ad-hoc communication is based on IEEE 802.11p, in Europe known as ETSI-ITS-G5 and in the US as DSRC.

IEEE has setup a new Study Group in IEEE802.11 on Next Generation Vehicular (SG NGV). The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium supports a backward compatible evolution of the V2X communication. The Consortium sees this initiative as a strengthening of the international cooperation that aims on harmonisation of a common hardware platform for C-ITS – not only for the initial deployment, but also in the long term. This platform for C-ITS ad-hoc communication is based on IEEE 802.11p, in Europe known as ETSI-ITS-G5 and in the US as DSRC.

As off 2019, in Europe, new vehicles and road infrastructure will be equipped with cooperative ad-hoc short-range communication systems based on the ETSI ITS-G5 standard (IEEE 802.11p), offering the first set of Day One services. In line with the strategy of the European Commission on cooperative, connected and automated mobility (C-ITS), the ad-hoc wireless Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication aims on improving road safety and traffic flows by supporting foresighted driving, advanced driver assistance and automation.

For serving the high safety goals and protecting investments of vehicle customers and road operators, interoperability across borders and brands as well as backwards compatibility are key requirements of C-ITS. The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium fully supports a smooth integration and deployment of the Next Generation Vehicular (NGV) system in the existing vehicular communication environment based on the IEEE802.11 specification (802.11p as part of 802.11-2016 used in ETSI ITS-G5 and IEEE WAVE). Potentially, non-interoperable enhancements – like, e.g., LDPC codes – should be carefully investigated for enabling new applications which require these features. Furthermore, new use cases and frequency bands should be considered by the investigation.

As a result of the IEEE802.11 NGV study group, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium expects a set of opportunities for improving ETSI ITS-G5 in future which shall be designed to offer interoperability and a smooth migration path.

About the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium

Enhancing road safety and traffic efficiency by means of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (C-ITS) is the dedicated goal of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium. The industrial driven, non-commercial association was founded in 2002 by vehicle manufacturers affiliated with the idea of cooperative road traffic based on Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications (V2V) and supported by Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communications (V2I). The C-ITS roadmap is formed by the initial deployment phase followed by further innovation phases towards cooperative automated driving and aiming on the vision zero. The Consortium comprises of major vehicle manufacturers, automotive suppliers, engineering companies and research organisations.

Over the years, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium has evolved to be one of the key players in preparing the initial deployment of C-ITS in Europe and the subsequent innovation phases. CAR 2 CAR members focus on wireless V2V communication applications based on ETSI ITS-G5 and concentrate all efforts on creating standards to ensure the interoperability of cooperative systems, spanning all vehicle classes across borders and brands. As a key contributor, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium works in close cooperation with the European and international standardisation organisations such as ETSI and CEN.
