Initial deployment of wireless Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication based on the ETSI ITS-G5 standard (IEEE 802.11p) will start next year in Europe. For enabling next innovations towards cooperative automated driving, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium has established a dedicated working group on functional safety in December 2017. During the CAR 2 CAR Week in March 2018 the new functional safety group aligns its work programme with the other technical and functional working groups of the Consortium.

CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium Statement

Functional Safety Group established – enabling ITS-G5 support of cooperative automated driving

Automated driving is expected to change significantly the traffic behaviour and transport organisation in future. This is true for examples like truck platooning on motorways as well as for dynamic platooning at cooperative intersections of urban areas. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) enables required cooperation and improvements of the automated functions. In future cooperative automated vehicles will take over more and more responsibilities from the driver causing the consideration of functional safety aspects of the vehicles including ad-hoc short-range communication ITS-G5 for overcoming related potential safety risks.

The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium functional safety group considers all communicating entities when defining requirements and methods for the implementation of functions of future cooperative automated vehicles. The definitions will consider todays ISO 26262 as well as norms from all other industry domains and shall be the base for future norms of cooperative automated vehicles.

About the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium

Enhancing road safety and traffic efficiency by means of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (C-ITS) is the dedicated goal of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium. The industrial driven, non-commercial association was founded in 2002 by vehicle manufacturers affiliated with the idea of cooperative road traffic based on Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications (V2V) and supported by Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communications (V2I). The Consortium comprises of major vehicle manufacturers, automotive suppliers, engineering companies and research organisations.

Over the years, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium has evolved to be one of the key players in preparing the initial deployment of C-ITS in Europe and the subsequent innovation phases. CAR 2 CAR members focus on wireless V2V communication applications based on ITS-G5 and concentrate all efforts on creating standards to ensure the interoperability of cooperative systems, spanning all vehicle classes across borders and brands. As a key contributor, the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium works in close cooperation with the European and international standardisation organisations such as ETSI and CEN.
